Before you apply
Chase
- 5/24 — Automatically denied for most Chase cards if you opened 5+ personal cards (any issuer) in the last 24 months.
- Sapphire 48-month rule — One Sapphire card at a time; new Sapphire bonus only if you haven't received one in 48 months.
- Southwest / Marriott / United family rules — Only one personal Southwest card; Southwest bonus once per 24 months. Marriott bonus depends on Amex Bonvoy cards held in the last 24-30 months.
- 2/30 — Roughly 2 approvals per 30 days (1 for business cards).
Business cards don't add to your 5/24 count but 5/24 still applies to getting them.
American Express
- Once per lifetime — Welcome bonus on each card product once per lifetime; targeted offers sometimes waive this.
- Family rules — Holding or having held a higher-tier card in a family (e.g. Gold) can make you ineligible for a lower-tier card's bonus (Green). Check the 'you're not eligible' pop-up before applying.
- 1/5 and 2/90 — Max 1 credit card approval per 5 days and 2 per 90 days (charge cards excluded).
- 5 credit card limit — Typically 5 Amex credit cards at once (charge cards excluded).
Citi
- 1/8 and 2/65 — One card per 8 days, two per 65 days (personal); 1 per 95 days for business.
- 48-month rule (ThankYou / AAdvantage) — Bonus only if you haven't opened or closed a card in the same family in the last 48 months.
- 6/6 — Often denied with 6+ inquiries in 6 months.
Capital One
- 1/6 — One Capital One card approval per 6 months.
- 2 personal cards — Generally max 2 open personal Capital One cards (Venture X and some others exempt).
- 48-month bonus rule — Venture / Venture X bonus only if you haven't received one on that card in 48 months.
- Triple pull — Pulls all three bureaus.
Bank of America
- 2/3/4 — Max 2 cards per 2 months, 3 per 12 months, 4 per 24 months (7/12 and 3/12 rules for non-customers).
- Preferred Rewards — 25% / 50% / 75% more rewards with $20k / $50k / $100k combined at BofA + Merrill — set your tier in Settings.
U.S. Bank
- Inquiry sensitive — Often denied with recent inquiries; freezing ARS/SageStream may help.
- Existing relationship — Approval odds much better with a U.S. Bank deposit account.
Wells Fargo
- 1/6 — One card per 6 months.
- 15-month bonus rule — No bonus if you received one on the same product in the last 15 months (48 months on some).
Discover
- 2 cards max — Typically 2 Discover cards at once; second after 1 year.
- Cashback Match — First-year match replaces a sign-up bonus.
Barclays
- 6/24 — Often denied with 6+ new accounts in 24 months.
- 24-month bonus rule — Bonus once per 24 months per product.
Synchrony
- Lenient approvals — Store and co-brand cards approve at lower scores; watch for deferred-interest financing.
