THE PREMIUM CARD GUIDE

Every perk on the cards that cost the most.

29 cards with a $250+ annual fee or a gate in front of them — invitation, private-bank relationship, or closed to new applicants. Every credit, perk and protection, and what the fee really costs once you use the credits.

Who gets what

Hover or tap a tick for the detail. Net = annual fee minus statement credits at realistic use (easy credits 100%, medium 60%, hard 30%); a green + means the credits are worth more than the fee — if you'd spend on those things anyway.

American Express Centurion AMEX

American Express

The Centurion Card from American Express

Invitation only medium confidence

By invitation from American Express only - there is no application. Amex does not publish criteria; invitations go to existing Amex cardmembers (usually long-time Platinum holders) with very high spending. Reported thresholds vary: roughly $250,000-$350,000+ a year on Amex cards for the personal card (One Mile at a Time, TPG, Upgraded Points), some sources say $350,000-$500,000, and ~$450,000-$500,000 for the business version. Some cardholders report asking Amex to be considered. Expect $15,000 in the first year ($10,000 initiation + $5,000 annual fee). [1] [2] [3] [4]

Fee: Plus a one-time $10,000 initiation fee (U.S.) in the first year, so $15,000 up front. Each additional (authorized user) card costs $5,000 a year. Fees raised from $2,500/yr ($7,500 initiation) in April 2020.

Earning, approval rules & sources
  • 1x Everything else — 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar on all purchases. Reviewers disagree on extras (Upgraded Points mentions 2x on Amex Travel and Uber; One Mile at a Time mentions 1.5x on purchases of $5,000+ with caps) - unconfirmed, so not filed.

American Express approval rules: Once per lifetime · Family rules · 1/5 and 2/90 · 5 credit card limit

Charge card; no preset spending limit. Amex's public Centurion pages are login-only, so everything here comes from 2025-2026 reviews (TPG, OMAAT, Upgraded Points, Doctor of Credit). July 2026: added a $1,000/yr Resy credit ($250 a quarter, enrollment required). Sources disagree on what it replaced: CardStack says the $250-a-quarter Saks Fifth Avenue credit ended June 30, 2026, and Upgraded Points says the $200 airline fee credit was dropped. Neither the Saks nor the airline credit is filed here. The one-time $300 SoulCycle bike credit and the $120 Uber One credit appear only on CardStack, so they are left out. The CLEAR amount comes from a TPG article dated Jan 2025. Protection limits and the rental car coverage type were not confirmed. No foreign transaction fee is widely reported, but I did not see it on an issuer page. Earns only 1x, so it is a poor card for earning points: its value is in status, lounges, concierge and access.
